Welcome

Located in, what was once the original English Evangelical Lutheran Church, Columbia Historic Preservation Society is dedicated to the historic preservation of the rivertown, Columbia, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (formerly : Wright’s Ferry and Shawana Town).  During the formation of our republic, Columbia was seriously considered a possible site for locating the new nation’s capital. For many years, it was thought of as the Gateway to the American West due to its position on the Susquehanna River (bridge and ferry) and its rail hub importance.

The congregation of the original English Evangelical Lutheran Church was incorporated March 8, 1853. This church building, and the Old Manse beside it, has been our home since 1981. The Manse was designed by the celebrated Lancaster architect, Cassius Emlen Urban, born in nearby Conestoga Township (1863-1939).
